Buyer Beware

Storage space / closet space

When looking at an empty condo or a set of plans we often overlook the basics.  Simple things like ample storage space become critical only after we move in and find we still have a pile of stuff in the middle of the living room.  Where to our guests hang their coats?  Where do we store our skis?  Where do we store all our winter clothes?  Where do we store the extra groceries?  Where do we store the booze?  Where do we store the treadmill?  Where do we store the books - or is there even room for a simple bookshelf?  Oh and what about the scuba gear or the 2 mountain bikes - where will we put them?  Yes its possible to make the condo look pretty sexy on paper and we "assume" that all those things have been considered but in fact the only thing that is really considered is basic marketability to first time buyers.  You are young and in love and buying your first place - way up from the basement apartment you have been surviving in and accumulating very little.  Now with stars in your eyes you see this shiny set of plans and we can get in on this great opportunity for only a small deposit.  Again I repeat.  Buy what you can clearly see and seriously think through all your needs and how they will fit.  That "small" deposit on a future dream can become seriously painful when you realize that you cannot possibly live in the place once it is finally built and then its your problem to try to dispose of it or get sued by the builder.

Remember this is serious stuff and think it through and don't let a "sincere" "patient" professional salesman squeeze you into making a decision.  Make it on your own and only after you have done your homework.
